Maz How common are flex-time or work-from-home policies at large companies? Are these available for entry-level workers or just more seasoned employees? I guess what I'm wondering is, would it be reasonable to ask my manager if I can work from home one day a week?

In my experience, work from home options are decided on a case by case basis and are more reflective of the job itself vs someone's time or tenure with an organization.
If you are reasonably confident that the nature of the work that you do can be supported from outside of the company's campus, then you should be fine to explore the option with your boss.
One recommendation before you speak with him or her is to determine how you will both define success in this relationship. Do you have particular metrics or goals that you must hit on a weekly or monthly basis? How will you prove that you are contributing this same quality or level of delivery from home?

There are a number of large, medium and small companies that offer fexible schedules for employees. This is company specific and generally ties to a role that would support this. Some customer facing roles would not support this type of arrangement. Many companies have guidelines on this topic. You can certainly ask about work life balance when you interview. You can also ask about the tele-commute policy.

More and more companies are open to flexible working arrangements. Of course, your role has to be one in which working from home is seamless for your customers and/or business partners. It is likely though, that a certain level of trust has to be in place between your manager and yourself. This can take some time to establish. Although companies are becoming more open to working remotely, there should be a reason for requesting to work remotely on a regular schedule (ex. child care, transporation issues, etc,). I would not recommend approaching your manager with such a request unless you have such a justification. If you do have this, put together a written plan on how you will make the remote situation work and show our manager that you given considerable thought to the proposition.

Research your organization's guidelines, consider any customer or team impacts, and prepare for your conversation with leadership. Good luck.

We offer both flex-time and some work-from-home options. They aren't necessary offered to just entry-level employees or seasoned employees. It really depends on the business area and their needs. Before asking your manager, I would consider if your work could be done from home. Are there any privacy issues? What would be the impact to those not working from home? We leverage all options but they are based on business need.
