Is it ok to e-mail companies directly expressing an interest in an internship/entry level position if they have no job openings that fit my profile? Is this more effective than applying for posted jobs? I feel that if a specific opening is posted hundreds of people apply and it is very unlikely to be invited for an interview.

YES, it is OK. In fact, it shows initiative which is an attribute admired by many hiring managers. If there is nothing available, there is a chance that a hiring manager or recruiter would be impressed enough to pass your resume on to a colleague who could use your skills and knowledge. Being proactive can definitely be more effective than applying for jobs. Go for it!

Yes, this is something we see pretty often. Companies today are very much about the online application process, however, so I would not recommend doing one or the other. I would suggest sending an email, letting the employer know what you're interested in, and then letting them know you'll keep up to date on their open positions and apply to anything you see as a fit. You could also link to this person on LinkedIn to make it a bit more personable, if you wanted.

Yes! This is very common. When you do reach out, I would be strategic and direct in who you contact and in your messaging. When reaching out, it is best to contact someone in recruiting. Be clear in what your job interests are. I often see candidates reach out and say they are interested in any position that matches their skillset. For entry-level employment, there could be a multitude of positions that match your skillset so it's helpful if you narrow down your interests and clarify what you are interested in and passionate about. For example, "I am interested in opportunities within Marketing or Communications."
After reaching out to the recruiter, it is still equally important for you to continue checking for available positions through their Careers site. When a position does become available, submit your application and feel free to reconnect with the recruiter. By reaching out, it can help your application stand out and shows your passion for working for the company.

Yes, it is ok to reach out to a connection you may have at the company of interest. In doing so, you should ensure that your skill set aligns with the position. For example, if the company is an accounting firm, but your major is philosophy, that may not be a good fit, depending upon the position. If you feel that your skills are a match, have the courage to utilize your connection for a potential referral into the company.
While it is unclear whether this tactic is more effective, it certainly does not hurt. Please also ensure to follow the proper application process as defined by that company.
