Is volunteer experience important for a potential employee to have?

Yes! Volunteering, even just on a once in a while basis shows that you are a team player and are willing to give back to your community. It definitely shines a positive light on you as a potential employee.

Volunteer experience definitely stands out, especially for companies that value philanthropy and integrate that into their mission. That being said, how you speak to your experiences can be more important than the specifics on your resume. For example, a candidate who volunteers for a few hours a week may not stand out as much as someone who works a full-time job on top of their college coursework. Employers look for how you can leverage your unique experiences in the workplace and volunteer work is often a great way to highlight that. If you do have a plethora of volunteer experience, be prepared to speak about that to employers. If your volunteer experience is not as heavy because you spent that time doing something else important to you, you can communicate that as well.

Although it is not a requirement for most roles I would say it can be very important.  I wouldn't advise putting every volunteering experience you've ever had on a resume, but choose a few key experiences that help show the business who you are outside of work.
