When is the best time to start doing internships? Is the summer before my sophmore year too early?

Hi there - great question! I don't really think there is a "best" time to start doing internships. Most companies are looking for students who have completed a certain set of courses or a specific number of years of school, so read the internship descriptions carefully. If you meet the minimum qualifications, by all means, apply! Internships are an excellent way to gain real-life experience and put your classroom knowledge to work. Best of luck in your search! -Phil

Thanks for asking! Like Phil said above, there isn’t really a “best” time to start doing internships. Typically, most companies hire rising seniors and rising juniors for summer internships, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t going to consider a rising sophomore. If you meet the basic qualifications and have experiences to discuss during an interview, there is a possibility you could obtain an internship. Summer internships are not the only way to gain real-life experiences over the Summer. If you are unable to obtain an internship the Summer before your sophomore year, it’s important to make sure you’re still spending your time constructively, gaining experiences you can talk about later (i.e. volunteer opportunities, summer jobs…). Hope this helps!
