Is it more beneficial to intern twice with the same company, or to intern at multiple companies?
Answered by Rachel, Hiring Expert at Eaton, on Tuesday, September 5, 2017
The answer is it depends. If you are really trying to get hired in with that particular company than repeated internships with that employer is more beneficial as they are able to have a greater depth of understanding of you and your skills. If it is just the industry experience you are looking for and not a specific company than having some diversity in both your experiences and companies is beneficial to show your versatility. Ultimately, it is how you perform in your internships that is the most important aspect. How did you add value to the company, would they hire you again, what did you learn from your experience and how has it changed you personally or professionally?

I agree with my colleague from Eaton. I think it really depends on the type of move you're planning to make and your career goals. Relationships are everything when it comes to seeking a full-time role after graduation: if you've interned at a great company and want to stay there, by all means, go back and do another internship with them and build those strategic relationships. If you're more open to leaving and/or just gaining more industry experience, then networking with folks at other companies could serve you well. Whichever path you choose to take, make sure to maintain those strong connections and relationships after you've finished your internship assignment. Connect with former managers and colleagues on LinkedIn and keep the lines of communication open. If you were a great employee as an intern, they may be more likely to hire you on when they have a new full-time position open. Best of luck!

Thank you for the question. It honestly depends on your career goals and interests with the company. If you are looking for a long term career with that company than doing more than one internship can certainly benefit you. However if you are still trying to determine what industry to work for then doing two internships at different companies can help offer different perspectives to help make your decision.
Good luck to you!
