I just graduated high school and I'm applying for a job. I have no work experience. What should I include on my resume? I was going to put I was the captain of the varsity baseball team to show leadership and communication. Should I include volunteer information? Any suggestions?

Yes, include your athletic experience and any other "non-classroom" school-related activities you may have participated in as well.  Volunteer information is also great to add, any experience you have that an employer can translate into/assess against skills that are required for a job or a career with them.  For example, your athletic captaincy minimally represents leadership skills, if not also focus, discipline, work ethic, desire, etc.; things required to get you there.  Just because you don't have "paid for" work experience, does not mean you don't have experience to offer.

Congrats on your graduation! Employers will understand that you have a limited amount of detail to put on your resume. With that being said, you want to include any activities that should your leadership, dedication and experience. I would definitely recommend including your time spent as the baseball team captain. You are exactly correct with stating that it highlights your leadership and communication abilities. Include any awards or achievements as a captain as well. Volunteer work is huge! This is a great substitute for work experience. Include all your duties and responsibilities during the time volunteering. This will show employers the same details as work experience would.

First, let me say that I am proud of you for even thinking that way! YES, put captain of the baseball team on your resume for that reason. Be prepared to tell a story that demonstrates your leadership and communication skills as part of the job interview.

And, YES, include volunteer information. When we volunteer for events or organizations, we have to complete tasks to make sure everything goes well. So your volunteer experience could demonstrate your ability to complete tasks.

If possible, try to write a few words about results. For instance, try to include outcome of the volunteer experience. For example, "Food packaging resulted in 50 lbs. of food for homeless." If your baseball team had a winning record or showed some sort of improvement from the previous season, include that. I hope all of that makes sense and best of luck!

You should absolutely include your sports, volunteer, and any other extra-curricular experience that shows you will be a hard worker, good communicator, and show high learnability - the desire and ability to quickly grow and adapt one's skill set to remain employable throughout their working life.
