I'm looking to set some New Year's resolutions for my professional life this year. Any advice on some good professional resolutions? And, any advice on how to stick with them for all of 2017?

Hi there,
This is a great idea! Have you thought about taking up a monthly book reading? There are a lot of great books out there about building your personal brand, leadership skills, and more! Depending on where you are at in schooling or your career, there are plenty of books to match your next steps and where you want to go. I would also recommend joining in a book club or something of the sort; this would help with keeping things exciting as 2017 goes on, plus- it would help to build your network.

Good luck!

Hello! It is great that you want to set yourself up for success in 2017 and develop yourself professionally! There is a lot of opportunity for professional self-development, whether that is reading professional development books, participating in online training courses, or joining a professional networking group. You could focus on topics related to your career goals and your development needs to help prepare you for your job or internship. If you set a goal for what you want to achieve during the year and set time aside each week dedicated to professional development, it will help you stick with your resolutions. Best of luck!

Thanks for the question!

I would keep your approach simple. Ohio State is a very large and reputable university with alumni all over the world, in all businesses and in all non-profits. I would work the alumni network and leverage OSU first.

Another key to getting into a focused area is to realize there are many paths to getting there. Your first job won’t be your only job and your first organization won’t be your only organization. If you find a non-profit that aligns with your passion and your skills, regardless of its size or reputation, get involved and see where it takes you.

A different approach all together would be to start your own non-profit. With strong communication skills you may very well be able to get something off the ground you are particularly interested in and then leverage that into a larger opportunity. Beyond what you have learned and experienced in university, going through the difficulty of setting something up, building the vision, and gathering donations, followers and volunteers you will know what people went through to start a future organization you may join.

Best of luck!

Happy New Year! This is an interesting question for this is a topic people are on the fence about. Some say it is good to set resolutions and while others say you will never stick to them. I will tell you that I do set resolutions both personally and professionally. I start developing my resolutions based on what is important to me. If you feel passionate about something then you will more likely stick to it. One of my professional resolutions this year is to ensure that I take time out to read more and stay current on what is going in my area of expertise and my industry. I have a folder on my desk front and center on my desk where I keep my reading material. I am scheduling time on my 30 minutes on my calendar to read an article or two each week. I paid for a subscription to my favorite industry focused magazine. And, finally, I am sharing what I am reading with my team. For the first 10 minutes of my team meetings we are sharing articles that are of interest to each person – this ensures my team is engaged and staying current as well as holding me accountable. Make your resolution small and achievable and you are more likely to stick to it when you can see the goal in sight. Bring your colleagues or boss in, if appropriate, to assist you in achieving your goal. Good luck and I hope you achieve greatness in 2017.

I have come up with a few professional resolutions for myself for this year so I think this is a great idea!
I am relatively new to my job so for me, my priority right now is become proficient at what I do, really understand my role and where I fit in my company, read as much as possible on topics related to my field and staying on top of related news and trends. You'll also want to take into account where you are in your career when coming up with professional resolutions. If you have been at your current job for a while, a good way to challenge yourself and contribute to your professional growth and development is to ask your manager for a stretch assignment. You can also join professional associations in your industry or if you're already a part of one, then you can consider becoming more involved.

Sticking to resolutions is always the hardest part. My recommendation is to hold yourself accountable or ask a coworker or friend to help hold you accountable for completing your resolutions, it also doesn't hurt to reward yourself when you complete a resolution. Hope this helps!
