Good question! With so much going on social media, many tend to forget about LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a great tool and asset to have for one’s professional growth and networking. At times it is not all about what you know, but who you know and that is when professional networking/ a LinkedIn profile comes in handy. First off, one needs to create a captivating bio with a professional photo. Next, research and search throughout LinkedIn for any professional groups to join or better yet create your own group. Before you do either, think about who you’re trying to attract. Then make your connections, be strategic in your connections and do not send the standard LinkedIn message. Try to make it a more personalized message. Finally, stay in touch with your connections and become a connector for others.

LinkedIn can be used in a number of ways to help you network with professionals and companies. Many students choose to network with past alumni who are in a specific job field or company that interest them. Building an alumni network can be very beneficial during a job search and it will also help you learn about different companies and professions. Another way you can choose to network is through company’s job postings. If you are interested in a specific job, you could send a message to the recruiter using InMail to learn more about the opportunity and the company to see if you would be a great fit. Lastly, try to be an active member of LinkedIn. Take the time to scroll through your homepage to see what your connections are posting. Post articles that you find interesting since this will be a great way to start a relationship with your connections.

How do you use LinkedIn to network? LinkedIn is a powerful networking tool and can be used in a variety of ways to network. Here are a few things I’d recommend you do in order to make the most of LinkedIn as a networking tool:
  • Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated, professional, and accurate.
  • Connect with your close friends, regardless of the type of work they do or industry they’re currently in. This will allow you to build a virtual network of connections through your friends. Look at your friends’ profiles and look through their connections. If they are connected to someone that you think would be a good person to talk to, whether for a specific role, or just to find out more about the company they work for, ask your friend to do an introduction. On a professional networking site like LinkedIn people are much more willing to connect with friends of friends than strangers.
  • Follow the companies that you are interested in so you can stay abreast of changes at that firm, roles that might open up, as well as any new research or products the company launches. If you find that you have a 2nd or 3rd connection to someone at a firm that you’re interested in, ask your immediate contact to introduce you to the person at the firm.
  • Do your homework before reaching out to a new person on LinkedIn by reviewing their profile to understand their professional background. You never know when you might find something in common that could help you network with more ease (such as someone being an Alum of the school you currently go to or them speaking the same language that you’re currently learning). Also, if you review someone’s profile before reaching out to them, your conversation with them will be a lot more impactful.
Make sure that you’re investing your time in actually “networking” and not just reaching out to people to ask for a job at their company. The big difference is that with networking your focus is to learn from the other person and get to know them. Ask them about their experiences, their career progression, and what challenges/accomplishments they’ve had along the way. When you focus your efforts on building your network, even if there are no open positions at their company at the moment, if they’ve had a conversation with you and you’ve shown them that you’re passionate about their industry, they are likely to remember you and reach out to you the next time there is an open role at their firm.
