It really depends upon what industry you are planning on entering as each will have a slightly different path to follow. In general, look for an initial entry level role that is either going to put you in touch with the back end of the business so that you can learn process of how your organization makes it's products, a customer facing role that is going to allow you to learn the front end of the business and make key contacts within the organization, or look for a role that is a hybrid of the two that will give you the opportunity and flexibility to learn. Learning is the key and is more important than what role you start out with in a company. If you have the ability to learn the industry, understand your company's current state, have access to the strategic plan and future state goals, and the drive to do your own research and build your network you can move yourself forward.
