I have an assignment where I need to ask a set of questions to professionals in the field that I am interested in finding employment (Information Security). How should I actually go about finding and contacting these people?

There are various ways one can find people within their field of interest, such as Information Security. One could ask family, friends, or professors if they have someone in mind. Another method could be social media. One in particular being LinkedIn, there one  can research companies and link up with individuals with related career goals/interests. Also, one can "inmail" message individuals within that particular field of interest. LinkedIn is a great source for any professional, no matter what line of work they are in. Once it comes to contacting them, keep your message short, sweet, and straight to the point. Introduce yourself, explain the assignment and ask if they would be willing to help out. This way they got to know you, know what you want to achieve and also you are networking!

I would agree with the person who answered before me. I would first look to your network of family and friends to find some professionals in the Information Security job field. You could also consider looking at companies that you are interested in the Information Security field and "inmailing" professionals in that particular company. Asking these professionals will allow you to network with professionals in a company that you may want to work for in the future. Lastly, you could ask your  professor if he/she has any ideas or contacts of people you could contact.

The easiest and most effective way to accomplish this is to use the professional networking site, LinkedIn.  There are literally millions of users on LinkedIn and when a profile is created, the user's background is also listed.  I would suggest conducting a few key word searches on LinkedIn to identify the people in which you have an interest.  Once you have identified them, send them a request to connect (note-you will have to create a profile of your own to do this).  Once connected with them, you can send them a direct message through LinkedIn asking them to help with your questions.  Building this network will also help you in the longer term when you are ready to search for employment.
