How do I transition from being a Provider Relations Representative to a position in HR?

Transitioning jobs!  Great topic!  Anytime you are looking to make a move, it pays to make a contact.  Someone in a role you are interested in within your own company, or in the field you want to be in outside of your company.  Networking and information interviewing serve a couple of different purposes.  Is this actually the path for me?  Would I even like being in HR?  What kinds of jobs are out there? Do I need to get more education to be successful in my current company?  PHR? SPHR?  Are they worth it? 

Once you make the decision to move forward.  Transitioning is a matter of determining the qualifications needed for the position and starting to apply.  Ask a lot of questions, talk to a lot of people.  Best of luck!

Depending on the type of HR role you are interested in transitioning to, your current role might have a lot of similar qualifications. It is important before you transition to another function that you conduct some investigative work. Since HR is such a large function, see if you can hone in on the area that would be of most interest to you. Would you be interested in a role in recruiting, training, benefits, compensation, generalist, etc...? Since those roles' responsibilities can vary significantly it would be helpful to focus in on the area you are passionate about and then setting up time to network with people who are already in those roles. You can find out from individuals in the roles how they got to their roles and what their experience is. You can also find out if there will be upcoming openings, and they might even have suggestions on who else you can network with, or if there are groups which might be helpful to join. Transitioning fields can be a challenge.  First off make sure you can clearly articulate to yourself why you want to change fields. What is it about HR that you feel calls you to this field?  What type of impact are you looking to make?  Do you want to specialize in a particular area like compensation or benefits? Or, would you rather take on a generalist role?  Once you have a focus on what you want to do and what type of industry you want to practice your HR craft in, start networking.  If you are not already a member of the Society of Human Resources Management or a similar HR organization get connected.  I also suggest connecting with your local Chamber of Commerce, and business organization group in order to make contacts that will help you successfully transition to a new career path.

Whenever you are considering transferring positions, you should consider seeking a mentor or someone who is in the job you want to transfer to. Seeking out someone who is your position of interest, will allow you to learn what types of skills you will need to be successful on the job and any advice they have on breaking into the HR field and it also will allow you to network and get your foot in the door. Networking is a great way to learn about different companies and positions and will be very beneficial in your transition process. I would also research about different positions in HR that you are interested in to get a sense of what type of requirements and skill sets HR positions generally look for. Good luck!
